As you have seen in this session, there are two important ways of collecting evidence for the existence of previous civilisations: excavation and archaeological survey. You should now be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of each method. You should also be able to appreciate the importance of ruins, as they can act as guides on the surface to what is beneath. We showed how different kinds of information can be put together by looking at an example from the Sphakia Survey.
