Welcome to Unit 2 – a History of Archaeology on Crete.

In this unit, you will be introduced to the history of archaeological discoveries on Crete, and explore the themes above by interacting with the material. Throughout this study period we would also like you to debate the question below on the Discussion Forum.

The study period for this unit will begin on Monday, 4 November 2002.

Aims

By the end of this unit, you should:

Understand the order of discovery of the three different epochs on Crete
Understand changes in the way that archaeological work has been done since the nineteenth century, and the reasons behind these changes.
Understand how archaeology on Crete is managed today by the Greek government.
Understand that archaeology is closely related to the political realities of the day.
