Welcome to Unit 3: Excavations on Crete: Three Examples from Three Epochs.

Introduction

In this unit we will be investigating archaeological excavations, using examples from the three major epochs of Crete. You will remember we discussed excavation in Unit 1.

The study time for Unit 3 will begin on Monday, 18 November.

Aims

By the end of this unit, you should:

Have a basic understanding of Minoan architecture and life at Knossos in the Neo-palatial period.
Be familiar with architecture and urban life at Gortyn in the Roman to Late Roman periods.
Have a basic understanding of architecture and urban life in Venetian Khania.
Be able to understand the differences between the three sites.

Required Reading

For this unit, you should read Chapter 3 ‘Where? Survey and excavation of sites and features’ of Renfrew and Bahn, Archaeology.
