You should now be familiar with the concept of archaeological time, and be able to describe and appreciate the difference between relative and absolute dating. Dating is the bedrock on which archaeology rests. Relative dating means putting things in a sequence; absolute dating means tying that sequence to a world-wide dating system. You will also realise how important radiocarbon dating is for some archaeological periods.
In the next session, we will be taking a closer look at the three archaeological epochs on Crete, and providing a brief historical overview of each.
