Sphakia Survey Web site

We now wish you to use the Sphakia Survey Web site to explore the contexts of these two sites within Region 8 (which includes the Frangokastello plain).

Sphakia Survey: Site database

In the Site database, select ‘Graeco-Roman’ in the GRAECO-ROMAN PHASE field, enter ‘8’ in the SITE REGION field, and click BEGIN SEARCH. This will return only Graeco-Roman sites in Region 8.

Analyse the information in the FUNCTION field.

i. What sorts of Graeco-Roman sites are found in Region 8?

ii. How do the sites differ in size?

Repeat the operation as described above, this time analyzing the SCATTER SIZE field.

iv. How do the sites vary over time within the Graeco-Roman period?

Region 8 of Sphakia produced in the nineteenth century a complete Athenian vase, presumably from a tomb.

The problem is that we don’t know exactly where in the Frangokastello area the pot came from. In other words, we don’t have its exact context. What can this pot add to our view of the Graeco-Roman period in this area?
